Details of the program:
1. Preparation of the post-thesis. 3*2h
- Discussion on professional and personal skill assessment as well as motivation and interests. Steps towards a career plan.
- Strategies and resources for scientific job search. Simulation exercise with real data.
- Preparation of a CV in English according to the career plan.
- Writing of application letter and email.
At the end of this part participants have a CV and an application letter template ready and reviewed.
Individual optional debriefings possible for FdV fellows.
2. Networking. 3*2h.
- Networking goods practices. Build and maintain a professional network. Homework: create your business cards
- Usage of professional networks online, LinkedIn, Viadeo, specialized networks. Homework: write an efficient profile on LinkedIn.
- Blogging as a professional tool and strategy. Learn how to improve your positioning on the web and valorize your scientific expertise. Homework: create your own professional blog.
Products of personal work will be individually reviewed and collectively debriefed at the following session.
At the end of this part students have their business cards, a professional profile online and have started a blog on their own work.
3. How to find a good post-doc?
- Simulation of a post-doc search: practical workshop with tutored search of information, writing of application letter and email (2h)
- An evening on post-doc: exchange of experience and seminars with current and ex-post-docs and visiting foreign academics.
4. Towards non academic careers for scientists.
This part aims to organize individual feedbacks on the students CVs and application letters, as well as getting personal recommendations from professional partners in the industry and different fields of activities. This will be followed by a roundtable with involved participants and a general debriefing.
